SPLIT GAINED AS CURTAIN GOES UP ON 2009 SEASON
Kissimmee, FL - The 2009 Geneva College softball season opened on Monday with a two-game split in the first two games of the Golden Tornadoes′ ten game swing through Florida. The day did not start well as the Golden Tornadoes dropped an 8-3 decision to Transylvania. Geneva College recovered later in the day with a 5-1 win over Webster.
After spotting Transylvania a 2-0 lead after one inning, Geneva cut the lead in half with a run in the top of the second. Samantha Bautista′s sacrifice fly plated Lyndsay Piette for the first run of the season. The momentum did not last as Transylvania came right back with three runs in the second. Trailing 8-1 in the last inning, the Golden Tornadoes plated a pair of runs in the final frame. RBI singles from Adriane Blake and Amy Pearce forced in the final two runs. Rebekah Wahl suffered the loss by allowing five runs in four innings of work.
Geneva had eight hits in game one including three hit performance from Blake and a pair of knocks from the bat of Amy Pearce.
Game two was dominated by starting pitcher Ashley Archer. Archer tossed a complete game and allowed just one unearned run. She scattered seven hits and struck out four in the win. Offensively, Geneva banged out 12 hits including a three hit game from Michawn Rich. Rich got the offense going when she scored the first run of the game in the first inning on an RBI single off the bat of Amy Pearce. The Golden Tornadoes opened the game up with three runs in the third inning. Back to back RBI singles from Amy Pearce and Lexi Svingos highlighted the rally. Blake, Svingos, Pearce and Kim Slater each had two hits in the night cap.
The Golden Tornadoes will face Mt. Union College and Wittenberg College on Tuesday at Kissimmee, FL.
