WIN ONE, LOSE ONE BECOMING REPETITIVE
Kissimmee, FL - The good news for the Geneva College softball team is that it has won every day it has taken the field during its trip to Florida. The bad news is that the Golden Tornadoes have also lost every day of the trip. On Friday, the Golden Tornadoes split a doubleheader for the fourth time in four days. Geneva took game one against Hiram College by the score of 7-3 and dropped game two to the United States Coast Guard by the count of 1-0. The fourth consecutive split moved Geneva′s overall record to 4-4.
Lyndsay Piette supplied a second inning sacrifice fly to tie the game at one apiece. After Hiram again took a one run lead, Geneva responded with a Michawn Rich RBI single in the third inning. With the game tied at two in the fifth inning, Kara Zimmerman connected on a two-run homer, the first of her collegiate career. After Hiram got within a run in the sixth, Zimmerman answered again with a two-run single to put the game away. Zimmerman collected two of Geneva′s 12 hits for the game. Teammates Amy Pearce, Kim Slater and Sam Bautista also picked up two hits each.
Ashley Archer went the distance for her third victory of the trip. She allowed three unearned runs in seven innings of work. She struck out four while scattering nine hits.
Game two was dominated by pitching. Geneva′s Julie DiLonardo tossed five shut-out innings and came away with a no decision. She allowed five hits and struck out three. Rebekah Wahl came away with the hard luck loss after allowing an unearned run in the bottom of the seventh inning. The Coast Guard took advantage of a two-base throwing error to open the seventh inning. Geneva managed just two hits in the game and only sent one runner to third base in the entire game.
The Golden Tornadoes close out their Florida swing on Saturday with games against 21st ranked Ramapo and Hope College. Geneva returns home next week and will travel to LaRoche on Thursday before opening the home schedule a week from Saturday against Penn State Greater Allegheny.
