EIGHT IS GREAT, FLORIDA TRIP ENDS WITH WIN
STREAK REACHING EIGHT
Ft. Pierce, FL - The bus driver from the McCarter Bus Company may have to drag the Geneva College baseball team onto the bus on Monday evening. The Golden Tornadoes may be a bit reluctant to return to Beaver Falls after sweeping seven games in the sunshine state over the past week. The most recent win came on Monday morning to the tune of 13-3 over Bethany College. It was Geneva′s eighth consecutive victory and third straight against PAC foe Bethany. The win moved Geneva′s overall record to 9-2 as the Golden Tornadoes will head back to Beaver Falls to begin the northern portion of their schedule this weekend.
Head coach Alan Sumner needs only to be sure to pack the bats on the bus for the trip up north. Geneva put its bats to good use with a total of 72 runs in the seven games in the sunshine state. On Monday, Geneva posted 13 runs on 19 hits in cruising past the Bison. Geneva jumped out to a 4-1 lead through four innings before Bethany pulled to within a run in the fifth. The Golden Tornadoes broke the game open with a six run sixth inning. Phil Shallenberger delivered a two-run double and Derek Sumner capped the inning with an RBI single. Sumner continued his sizzling work at the plate with four hits in five at-bats. Tadd Eyster and Justin McGurgan had three hits each while Shallenberger and Andy Lubich collected two hits apiece.
Matt Baer went seven innings to pick up his third victory of the season. Baer allowed six hits and two earned runs. He struck out six while walking just two Bison batters. Dylan Viehdorfer and Chris Slick each tossed a scoreless inning to close out the game.
Geneva will host Penn State Beaver in a single game on Friday in the home opener. The Golden Tornadoes will visit Penn State Beaver in a doubleheader on Saturday.
