HOME SWEET HOME, GENEVA BREAKS OUT BATS IN HOME OPENER

Beaver Falls, PA - Geneva′s softball team was 10-2 in the first year on its home field back on the Geneva College campus in 2008. The Golden Tornadoes began year number two at the new facility in impressive fashion. Geneva took a pair of games from Penn State Greater Allegheny by the scores of 21-6 and 9-1. Both games were stopped after five innings due the mercy rule.

To say the offense got going early may be the biggest understatement of the day. The Golden Tornadoes posted 14 runs in the bottom of the first inning of the game number one. Geneva banged out ten hits in the opening frame and twice batted through the line-up. Ten of the runs were scored after two outs and the inning was capped by the first career home run off the bat of Lexi Svingos. Later in the game, freshman Julie DiLonardo launched her first career dinger. For the game, Geneva had 15 hits including a four hit effort from Martha Adams. Adams scored three runs and drove in five in the victory. Svingos had a home run and double and accounted for four RBI′s. On the mound, Ariel Lilly picked up her second victory of the season in four innings of work. She allowed four earned runs on seven hits. She struck out six including three straight punch outs in the third inning.

Game two proved to be much of the same for the Geneva offense as it posted a five run second inning and a four run third. Three straight singles to open the second were followed by a bases clearing triple from Martha Adams. In the third inning, Kim Slater cleared the bases with a three-run double to spark a four run rally. Amy Pearce launched her first home run of the season and 22nd of her career. She is just one homer away from tying Erin Exler′s school record of 23 set in 2003. DiLonardo threw four innings in earning her first collegiate victory. She allowed just one unearned run on four hits. She struck out five batters in the victory. Like game one, Rebekah Wahl picked up the final three outs. On the day, Wahl faced eight hitters and struck out five in just two innings of action.

The Golden Tornadoes will welcome Penn State Beaver to campus on Tuesday and Carlow University on Wednesday for back to back home doubleheaders. Geneva opens PAC play next Saturday at Grove City College.
