GENEVA GAINS SPLIT AGAINST 29th RANKED THOMAS MORE
Beaver Falls, PA - Geneva′s baseball team earned a doubleheader sweep against 29th ranked Thomas More College on Friday afternoon. Geneva defeated Thomas More 10-6 in game one before falling 2-1 in a game two pitcher′s duel. The split moved Geneva′s overall record to 13-5 while Thomas More saw its ten game winning streak halted and moved to 11-2-1 on the season.
Geneva fired up the bat rack in game one by knocking out 15 hits including a six run, eight hit fourth inning that put the game away. Thomas More struck first with an unearned run in the first inning, but Geneva came back with single runs in the second and third. With the game tied heading into the fourth inning, Geneva opened the inning with five consecutive hits and seven hits in eight at-bats. The rally was good for six runs which were highlighted by a two run single from Jon Jurinko and run scoring hits off the bats of Joe Jurinko and Joel Gatti. Gatti had three hits while teammates Joe Jurinko, Andy Lubich, Derek Sumner and Justin McGurgan had two hits each.
Mike Trn pitched 4 1/3 innings to gain his second victory of the season. Matt Baer closed out the final 2 1/3 innings for his first save of the season. Baer allowed one run on two hits in his relief appearance.
Game two was dominated by starting pitching. Derek Sumner made just one mistake, but it cost him and the Golden Tornadoes a victory. Sumner cruised through the first three scoreless innings with four strikeouts. After walking the lead-off hitter in the fourth, Sumner served up the eventual game winning two run homer. Geneva tried to come back and Sumner provided the only run of the game with a solo homer of his own to lead off the fifth inning. Geneva managed just six hits in game two including a pair of singles from Joe Jurinko.
Geneva and Thomas More will complete their three game series on Saturday morning with a single nine-inning game scheduled to begin at 11 am.
