Genevans Choir to perform on campus on March 27 and 28, 2009.

Beaver Falls, Pa. – Recently returned from a tour of Southeastern United States, Geneva College′s acclaimed mixed choir, The Genevans, will perform a free home concert at 8 p.m. on March 27 and 28 at the John H. White Chapel on Geneva′s campus.

Using the theme song for this concert is “Mourning into Dancing” by the contemporary Christian composer James Ward, the choir will sing a wide variety of music styles, from the Renaissance to contemporary, from folk songs to Spirituals and anthems. The concert will include motets from Victoria′s “Lamentations of Jeremiah” and the beloved “Super flumina Babylonis” of Palestrina. Also featured will be music by two great composers with special anniversaries this year: Felix Mendelssohn (b. 1809) and Henry Purcell (b. 1659). Rounding out the program are folk song settings by Johannes Brahms and humorous works by Mozart and others.

Two small groups from within the choir will also sing: Grace Notes (women′s sextet) and Eight Bells (barbershop).

Established in 1938, The Genevans represent the merger of Geneva′s original men′s and women′s glee clubs. Since then, the choir has performed across the United States and Canada, as well as in ten European countries, to significant acclaim.

The Genevans have been directed for twenty-seven years by Dr. Robert Copeland, a Geneva alumnus who earned his M.Mus. and Ph.D. degrees from the College-Conservatory of Music at the University of Cincinnati. Prior to joining the Geneva faculty, he served in the U.S. Army and taught in Kansas for ten years. Dr. Copeland is also an active elder in his church.

The concert is open to the public, and attendance is free. For more information, contact the music department at 724-847-6660
