FALLING BEHIND EARLY, GENEVA UNABLE TO RECOVER AGAINST W & J

Beaver Falls, PA - For the majority of the early season and throughout the month of March, Geneva′s baseball team has been taking no prisoners when it comes to opposing pitchers. The Golden Tornadoes brought a .359 team batting average into Wednesday′s single game against Washington & Jefferson. On the first day of April, the Golden Tornadoes were handed a bit of their own medicine in a 12-3 loss to the President′s. The loss dropped Geneva′s overall record to 13-7 while W & J improved to 10-4.

Just two innings into the nine-inning contest Geneva found itself down 6-0 to W & J. Mike Trn suffered his first loss of the season in just 1 2/3 innings of work and five earned runs. Geneva watched a President′s offense banged out 15 hits against a pair of Geneva pitchers. Mike Suluva came on to toss the final 7 1/3 innings and allowed only two earned runs while striking out seven batters. It was Geneva′s defense that allowed five unearned runs in the loss.

Geneva′s offense, for one of the only times all season, was held in check for most of the afternoon. The Golden Tornadoes managed just four hits including a pair of base hits from Jon Jurinko. Derek Sumner, Geneva′s leading hitter coming into the game, came through with an RBI double as part of a two-run Geneva fourth inning that pulled the Golden Tornadoes back to within four runs before the President′s continued adding on runs late in the game.

Geneva will meet Saint Vincent in a three game series beginning on Friday afternoon with a single, nine-inning game on Friday. The Golden Tornadoes will visit Saint Vincent for a doubleheader on Saturday.
