SUMNER SETS STRIKEOUT MARK IN HELPING GENEVA SALVAGE SPLIT
Beaver Falls, PA - On a day that was not so kind to pitchers, Geneva′s Derek Sumner did his best to make his outing a memorable one for himself and the Golden Tornadoes. After watching Grove City out slug the Golden Tornadoes 21-9 in game one of Thursday′s doubleheader, Sumner picked up his sixth victory of the season in helping Geneva to a 13-3 win in the night cap. In the process, Sumner also picked up a bit of history becoming Geneva′s all-time strikeout leader with 221 career punch outs including a ten strikeout effort on Thursday. Mostly in part of Sumner′s work on the mound and at the plate, Geneva improved to 16-8 on the season.
Game one was not for the faint of heart as the Golden Tornadoes surrendered 21 runs on 18 Grove City hits. The Wolverines posted four runs in the first, five in the second and four more in the third to open a 13-3 lead after three innings. The Golden Tornadoes tried to rally with four runs in the sixth but the Wolverines tacked on some late insurance to seal the victory. Tadd Eyster was 3-3 and scored four runs in game one. Jon Jurinko also collected three hits including a two-run homer n the fifth inning. Sumner also connected on a homer to open Geneva′s scoring in the sixth inning. Justin McGurgan also had three hits as part of Geneva′s 13 hit attack that was not enough in game one.
Sumner provided a two-run homer in the fifth inning to give the Golden Tornadoes a 7-3 lead before breaking the game open with six runs in the sixth. Sumner went the distance for his sixth victory of the season. He allowed just one earned run and struck out ten in the win. Sumner came into action needing just eight strikeouts to surpass Doug Bleggi′s career record of 218. Sumner set the mark with the second out of the fifth inning. Other offensive stars in game two included Phil Shallenberger′s three hits and two-run homer, and two hits each for Joel Gatti and Jon Jurinko.
Geneva will enjoy a long Easter weekend away from the field before getting back into action next Tuesday with a doubleheader at Westminster.
