SOMBER SENIORS, GENEVA DROPS TWO IN HOME FINALE

Beaver Falls, PA - Emotions were running high at Geneva′s 33rd Street Field on Saturday as the Golden Tornadoes celebrated their final home games with four seniors saying good-bye to the black and gold. The day turned out to be a disappointment as Geneva dropped a doubleheader to Gannon University by scores of 6-3 and 10-7. The doubleheader loss dropped Geneva′s overall record to 22-15.

The two teams swapped runs in the first inning of game one. After Gannon broke the ice, Geneva′s Tadd Eyster scored on a Joe Jurinko sacrifice fly. Gannon posted three runs in the fourth inning but the Golden Tornadoes pulled to within a run with a two-run fifth. Back to back RBI singles from Jon Jurinko and Phil Shallenberger got Geneva back in the game. Gannon posted a pair of insurance runs in the seventh and Geneva could not respond. All four of Geneva′s hits came in its two run fifth inning.

Game two was more of a slugfest as with each team scoring in the first three innings. A Shallenberger base hit and an Andy Lubich sacrifice fly gave Geneva a short-lived one run lead. Both teams scored one in the second as Eyster scored on a Jon Jurinko base hit. Gannon regained its advantage with four runs in the third, but Geneva answered with two more. Single runs in the fourth and sixth would not be enough as the Golden Tornadoes were unable to stop Gannon′s offensive attack.

Geneva had eights, but only one extra base hit in the night cap. After stranding 16 runners in a game two loss at Gannon on Wednesday, Geneva left ten on base in game two.

The Golden Tornadoes will now play the waiting game for the NCCAA national tournament that will not begin into May 20th in southern Ohio.
