Faith leaders in western Pennsylvania have banded together to offer a training course on comforting, supporting and providing basic care to suffering individuals. The Addressing Violence, Poverty, and Disasters Utilizing Psychological First Aid Training is scheduled for Wednesday, June 10, at the Allegheny Center Alliance Church in the Union Place Building in Pittsburgh, Pa.
The faith leaders are providing this service because they see the negative effects that disasters, violence and poverty can have on a community. The event is offered free of charge for attendees, but preregistration is required. The course will be held from 8:30 a.m. - 4 p.m.
This event is provided at no cost to participants because of the support of sponsors Allegheny Center Alliance Church, Church CARE, Geneva College, the Pennsylvania Department of Public Welfare and the Pennsylvania State Department of Health. Along with a complimentary lunch and a church disaster bag, those attending will receive certification in psychological first aid, which is focused on reducing stress rather than counseling.
Panelists include Pastor Donald Green, executive director of Christian Associates of Southwest Pennsylvania and co-chair of Emotional and Spiritual Support Committee, Sister Marguerite Kropinak who is Director at St. Joseph Spirituality Center and a member of Pennsylvania Behavioral Health Response Advisory Consortium and Dr. Mitchel Nickols, the senior pastor at Bibleway Christian Fellowship and a producer and host of Cornerstone Television. The featured speaker for this course is clinical social worker and Red Cross instructor John Weaver.
