Beaver Falls, PA - There were many things new at the first cross country meet of the season for Geneva College. In addition to several new faces on both the men′s and women′s teams for the Golden Tornadoes, the man in charge was new as well. Brian Yowler led his program into their first competition on Tuesday afternoon at Brush Creek Park as the Golden Tornadoes ran against Thiel College in the first dual meet of the season. At the end of the day, the final results were mixed but in the eyes of Geneva′s new man in charge all is well with the cross country program.

Geneva′s women cruised to a 17-42 victory to open the meet led by the top three runners in Shannon Rech, Samantha Miller and Olivia Biddle. Rech and Miller battled neck and neck for most of the race with Rech pulling away in the final stretch. Rech finished with a winning time of 22:42, while Miller came across the line a split second later. Emily Hoobler finished fifth overall and Monica Boyer came in sixth place as the Golden Tornadoes posted five of the top six times on the women′s side.

The men′s race was much more competitive as Thiel edged Geneva 26-29. Despite the loss, Geneva saw three of the top five runners come across for the home team. Nick Edinger was second in a time of 18:13 while his teammate Owen Stuck was fourth and Ryan Thorn finished fifth. Geneva′s top runner coming into the meet, Josh Gunnett, was forced to withdraw midway through the race with an injury.

The Golden Tornadoes will be back on the race trail on Saturday when they travel to Westminster College.
