OT THRILLER AT MERRIMAN, GENEVA SURGES
TO FIRST VICTORY

Beaver Falls, PA – Geneva′s men′s soccer team nearly went two full games without getting on the scoreboard. After being shut-out in the season opener on Tuesday, the Golden Tornadoes took 85 minutes to break the ice on Friday night. Trailing 1-0 with less than five minutes remaining in the game, Bruce Fox took a feed from Jake McCracken and flicked it into the net to tie the score. The evening′s heroics were not yet over as Josh Mann sent the Geneva fans home happy four minutes into overtime when he intercepted a pass and fired a laser into the corner of the net for the game winner.

Both Franciscan and Geneva came into the contest having lost their first games of the season. The Barons gave Geneva everything it could handle and then some when Allen Thomas opened the scoring in the 36th minute. It was a goal that nearly held up for the rest of the contest until Fox came to Geneva′s rescue.

David Callahan picked up the victory in goal by making five key saves along the way. Geneva out shot Franciscan 16-11 for the game, including an 8-6 advantage in shots on goal. Franciscan keeper Herrmann William was equally impressive with several key saves to keep Geneva off the board until late in the game.

Geneva will get right back to action on Saturday afternoon when it hosts Mt. Union College in day two of the Geneva Invitational. Mt. Union defeated Waynesburg 3-0 in the first game of the day at Merriman Athletic Complex.
