GENEVA DROPS FIRST MATCH OF 2009

AT POWERFUL SAINT VINCENT

Latrobe, PA - Going into Wednesday′s women′s tennis match at Saint Vincent College, Geneva head coach Mandee Craft knew it was asking a tall order from her youthful team to upend one of the top programs in the Presidents′ Athletic Conference. At the end of the day, there are no moral victories but the Golden Tornadoes more than held their own against the Bearcats in a 6-3 that evened Geneva′s early season record at 1-1.

Although Geneva won only one of six singles matches, the Golden Tornadoes did manage to pull off victories in two of the three doubles contests. In singles, number one singles player Chelsea Cover won her match after winning the first set and then having her opponent retire in the second set because of injury.

In number two doubles play, Amy Weller and Ashlyn Mallison cruised to an 8-1 victory while teammates Maura McLaughlin and Bethany Ragonesi won their match 8-6.

Geneva will go back out on the road this weekend for a three-match tournament hosted by Penn State Behrend. The Golden Tornadoes will open with the host team at 10 am before going up against PAC foe Bethany in pool play competition.
