Beaver Falls, PA – Momentum can play a major role in any athletic competition. On Wednesday night, the momentum between the women′s soccer teams from Geneva and Franciscan bounced back and forth almost as much as the ball itself. In the end, the Golden Tornadoes got the last laugh in a 3-2 victory that improved its overall record to 3-2 while Franciscan dropped to 1-4 on the young season.
Franciscan opened the scoring on a Lauren Miller goal in the 36th minute for the only tally of the first half. It didn′t take Geneva long to answer once the second half kicked off as Robin Webster found the net on a head shot off a perfectly executed corner kick from Annissa Halulko just two minutes into half number two.
Elise Mann got credit for the go ahead goal in the 65th minute when a ball ricochet around the box and eventually hit the cross bar and came directly down over the goal line. It seemed for a while that Mann′s goal may stand up as the game winner but the Barons pulled even in the 84th minute on a rebound goal from Regina Recznik.
With the game nearing an overtime session, Mann took off down the field on an impressive individual run through the middle of the Franciscan defense. Mann fed a perfect ball through to Maura Allen who launched the ball into the back of the net for the game winner and her third goal in two games. The game winner came with just over three minutes remaining in regulation.
Geneva drastically out shot its opponents by the count of 25-10 but Franciscan goalkeeper Nikki Traylor came up big with nine saves to keep her team in the game.
The Golden Tornadoes will hit the road this weekend when they travel to Point Park on Saturday afternoon. Geneva returns home next Wednesday to host Mt. Aloysius.
