Beaver Falls, PA – When the day started, Geneva′s volleyball team had hopes of a two game sweep against a pair of two of the top teams in the Presidents′ Athletic Conference. At the end of the day the Golden Tornadoes felt fortunate to salvage a split thanks to a dramatic comeback win in game five of the night cap. In the first match, Geneva dropped a 3-1 decision to Thomas More before fending off a pair of match points in a 3-2 victory against Washington & Jefferson. The split moved Geneva′s overall record to 6-2, including a 3-1 mark against PAC foes.
The day started well with Geneva taking game one against Thomas More by the count of 25-19, but losses of 27-25, 25-16 and 25-16 in the next three games put an end to Geneva′s five match winning streak. Adriane Blake led the offense with 18 kills while Rachel Kuegler added 12 kills. Laura Zerbe had nine kills and17 digs while Brandi Snavely chipped in with 40 assists and a pair of service aces.
Geneva did not allow its early day loss to get itself down in the night cap. In fact, Geneva won the first two games against W & J by scores of 25-23 and 25-20. The President′s came roaring back with wins in games three and four by scores of 25-21 and 25-18. The match came down to a fifth and deciding game that ended up seesawing back and forth before Geneva edged out W & J 20-18. Both teams combined to save five match points before Geneva was able to take a two-point lead for the victory.
Kuegler was a machine in the night cap with a team best 20 kills to go along with a pair of blocks, a pair of service aces and 17 digs. Blake added 16 kills and Snavely posted a season high 59 assists in the victory.
Geneva will travel to Frostburg State on Wednesday before facing Bethany and Westminster in West Virginia next Saturday afternoon.
