Frostburg, MD- The day began much better than it ended for the Geneva College women′s volleyball team. For the first time this decade the Golden Tornadoes found themselves ranked in the NCCAA top ten when the new national poll was released Tuesday morning. The day ended with a disappointing 3-1 loss at Frostburg State that dropped Geneva′s overall record to 6-3.

It would have been easy for co-head coaches Wendy Smith and Curt Conser to find excuses for Wednesday′s loss but they were more interested in level of play from their team. Geneva made the long three-hour trip to Frostburg, Md without their number two offensive player as sophomore Rachel Kuegler remained in Beaver Falls with flu-like symptoms. Adriane Blake did her best to pick up the slack but managed only 13 kills while Michelle Zimmovan and Laura Zerbe each picked up seven kills in Kuegler′s absence. Senior setter Brandi Snavely led the way with 29 assists and Brianna Mixter led the defense with 13 digs.

Geneva dropped games one and two by scores of 25-17 and 25-18 before taking game three. The Golden Tornadoes could not extend the match to a fifth game in dropping the fourth and deciding game 25-19.

The Golden Tornadoes will head to West Virginia on Saturday to play PAC foes Bethany and Westminster.
