Geneva College marked the success of the Beyond the Bend construction project with Experience Geneva Night on Saturday, September 5. Geneva College invited the community to the event to celebrate the newly improved campus and the beginning of the fall athletic season.
Student-led tours of the new areas of campus began around 6 p.m., followed by the Golden Tornadoes′ opening game against Frostburg State′s Bobcats. As part of the celebration, Geneva waived admittance fees for all those in attendance. The Golden Tornadoes started the season with a winning score of 41-28 in front of a record-capacity crowd of 6,245 fans.
"With the renovation of a three-year project, it inconvenienced many people and caused a lot of curiosity," says Director of Sports Information Van Zanic. "Opening season games always draw well, but nothing like the crowd that was in attendance on Saturday."
During halftime, a dedication of the senior gift from the class of 2009 was held. "We wanted a gift that would be carried on for years," said Kelly DeFilippo, senior class president of 2009. The senior class planted an eight- by ten-foot "G" bush in Reeves Field to the right of the scoreboard. The bush blooms in yellow hues, which reflect the Golden Tornado spirit.
Football was not the only athletic team at Geneva College to start the season off right. Men′s soccer had a dual victory against Franciscan and Mt. Union for a 2-1 record. Women′s soccer also scored big against Pitt-Bradford. The Golden Tornadoes′ fell behind 1-0 but quickly regained the victory. Women′s volleyball was a part of the winning streak and brought their record up to a strong 3-1.
Finishing touches of the Beyond the Bend construction project are being completed and the new campus will be dedicated on Saturday, October 10, as part of Geneva′s homecoming celebration.
