Beaver Falls, PA - When asked how the fall athletic teams are doing at Geneva College in the first month of the season the quick and easy answer is very good. When one dives deeper into the numbers it becomes clear that the month of September in the Golden Tornadoes′ athletic department has been far better than good. In fact, the first month of the season has been historic. Geneva College has enjoyed one of the best September′s in school history with a combined winning percentage of .721 in the five sports that can be calculated with wins and losses. In 43 September events, Geneva posted a combined record of 31-12 in the sports of football, men′s soccer, women′s soccer, volleyball and tennis.
How impressive is a .721 winning percentage when compared with other schools in the Presidents′ Athletic Conference? The next closest PAC school is Thomas More with a mark of .696. Other than the Saints, only Washington & Jefferson has posted a mark above .500 with a 21-19 record and a winning percentage of .525.
Each of Geneva′s five teams achieved a winning percentage of at least .600 through the first month of the season. The list is headed by Geneva′s football team with a perfect 3-0 record. Other sports include volleyball (10-3), women′s soccer (6-2), men′s soccer (6-3) and tennis (6-4).
The other fall athletic team is cross country and it has certainly not gone without some early season fanfare. This past week, freshman Shannon Rech was named the NCCAA national runner of the week for her 10th place finish at the Saint Vincent College Invitational last weekend.
What will the month of October bring for Geneva athletics? More importantly, how will these teams fare when post-season play rolls around? Those questions will be answered in good time but if the first four weeks are any indication, the fall athletic season at Geneva College is just getting started and the best is yet to come.
