Beaver Falls, PA - Much has changed around the Geneva College campus since 1997. The Golden Tornadoes have a new men′s soccer coach and a new group of players that are determined to make some history in 2009. One thing that hadn′t changed in 12 years was Grove City′s men′s soccer dominance over Geneva as the Golden Tornadoes had not beaten the Wolverines since 1997. All that changed on Saturday as Geneva worked its way to a 3-0 victory over Grove City and improved to 8-4 in the process.

Geneva was coming off of an offensive explosion in a 6-0 victory over Bethany and some of that magic carried over to Saturday as the Golden Tornadoes found the net on three of their first four shots on goal. Austin Petrie opened the scoring when he found the net off of a feed from Teddy Krzywiecki to get Geneva off and running just five minutes into the match. Twenty minutes later, Jake McCracken fired a low ball into the back of the net to double Geneva′s lead.

The Golden Tornadoes maintained their two-goal advantage into halftime despite being outshot by Grove City. In fact, the Wolverines ended the game with a 19-11 edge in the shots category, but David Callahan was solid in picking up his fifth shut-out of the year. Callahan made eight saves in grabbing his eighth win of the season.

The highlight goal perhaps of the season came with just under 30 minutes remaining on the clock. A perfectly struck cross from Austin Petrie found the head of a diving Ben Makin who deposited the ball into the back of the net for his first collegiate goal.

Geneva will welcome Washington & Jefferson to Merriman Complex next Tuesday in the second of three straight PAC home matches.
