Grove City, PA - The Geneva College volleyball team had an interesting doubleheader on Saturday afternoon. It dispatched of PAC foe Grove City 3-0 before rallying for a 3-2 win against Roberts Wesleyan in the first true NCCAA test of the season. The doubleheader sweep moved Geneva′s overall record to 14-5 and gave them a leg up in the chase for a bid to the NCCAA national tournament
The day started with a shut-out victory over Grove City by scores of 25-11, 25-11 and 25-19. Laure Zerbe led the offense with nine kills while Adriane Blake chipped with eight kills and 16 digs. Maggie Bowersox was strong at the net with seven kills and four blocks. Brandi Snavely picked up 32 assists and finished the two matches with 87 assists on the day.
Match number two did not exactly start in Geneva′s favor. In fact, Roberts Wesleyan took games one and two by scores of 25-22 and 25-21. Never out of the match, the Golden Tornadoes rallied for wins in games three, four and five by scores of 25-20, 25-22 and 15-12.
Adriane Blake, who has been hampered with a back problem for two weeks, reemerged as one of the best in the conference with 16 kills. Rachel Kuegler matched Blake′s 16 kills in the victory. Michelle Zimmovan was a service ace machine with a team best seven aces in the match. In one stretch in game three, Zimmovan reeled off five straight aces to gain the momentum back to Geneva. Zimmovan also contributed with six blocks and six aces.
Defensively, Brianna Mixter picked up a career best 33 digs and Snavely continued her stellar play with 55 assists.
Geneva will finally return home next Thursday for a 7 pm match with Bethany before heading to Washington & Jefferson next Saturday.
