Geneva Shocked By Bethany in Five Games

Beaver Falls, PA - If tonight′s volleyball match between Geneva and Bethany were being played on paper, it would have been a clear runaway for the Golden Tornadoes. Geneva entered play with three straight victories and just two losses in their last eight. Bethany had won just once in the last six matches and had already fallen to the Golden Tornadoes 3-0 earlier in the season. But games are not played on paper and Geneva found that out the hard way on Thursday night with a 3-2 loss to the Bison after having led 2-0 in the match. The loss dropped Geneva to 14-6 on the season while Bethany improved to 12-11.

The match started much like the first match between the two schools. Geneva cruised to two victories 25-14 and 25-21 to go up two games to zero. Bethany battled to a 25-19 win in game three before an epic game four turned the momentum completely. Bethany outlasted Geneva 30-28 in game four, but not before fending off a match point by the Golden Tornadoes. Bethany controlled the fifth game and came away with a 15-9 victory in the decisive game.

Geneva′s Michelle Zimmovan nearly single handedly willed Geneva to victory in game four. She posted four aces in five service attempts late in the game and rallied Geneva back from a 23-19 deficit to match point before Bethany came back to take the game and ultimately the match from the Golden Tornadoes.

Zimmovan led Geneva on the service line with five aces for the match while the defense got a boost from Brianna Mixter′s team best 20 digs. At the net, Adriane Blake and Rachel Kuegler led the way with 13 kills each with teammate Zimmovan chipping in with 11 kills. Brandi Snavely picked up 50 assists in the five game loss.

The Golden Tornadoes will try to put this loss behind them this weekend with a pair of matches at Washington & Jefferson. Geneva will take on the President′s before battling Fredonia in match number two.
