Latrobe, PA - The Geneva College volleyball team did not represent itself very well the first time it hooked up with Saint Vincent in 2009. The Golden Tornadoes lost to the Bearcats earlier this fall, but Geneva was able to gain some revenge on Saturday in a 3-2 victory. It was the ninth time this year that the Golden Tornadoes were forced into a fifth game. Geneva is 6-3 in those five-game matches and sits at 19-10 for the entire season. All that remains on the Geneva schedule is a showdown with Malone and Mt. Vernon Nazarene on Tuesday night in Canton to determine its post-season fate in the NCCAA.
It took a while for the Golden Tornadoes to get going on Saturday as they dropped the first game 25-11, with the other games going like this: 25-19, 27-29, 25-16, 15-12. Laure Zerbe gave the Golden Tornadoes a big lift to start the fifth and deciding game with a solid effort on the serving line. Zerbe finished the match with three aces to lead the Geneva attack.
At the net, Rachel Kuegler threw down 17 kills with Adriane Blake adding 12 kills and teammate Maggie Bowersox chipping in with 11 kills and a team best six blocks. Kristland McCracken gave Geneva a lift off the bench with eight kills of her own. Brandi Snavely orchestrated the offense to the tune of 51 assists with Brianna Mixter leading the defense with 25 digs.
The Golden Tornadoes will head to Canton on Tuesday night with the fate of the season on the line. Should Geneva defeat Malone and Mt. Vernon Nazarene, it would earn an automatic bid to the NCCAA national tournament in Florida later in November. Anything less than that could spell the end of the Geneva season.
