Dr. James Payton will speak at Geneva College as part of the fall 2009 Colloquia Series and the college′s Calvin 500 celebration. Payton will present two lectures: “Calvin: Champion of piety,” October 6, 7 p.m., in the Geneva College Student Center; and “Calvin and the Calvinists,” October 7, 10:10 a.m., in Metheny Fieldhouse.
Payton is a professor of history at Redeemer University College in Ontario, where he has served for the past 21 years. He is the author of Light from the Christian East: An Introduction to the Orthodox Tradition, published in 2007, and is currently working on a revised condensation of the English translation of Against Heresies by second-century Church father Irenaeus. This manuscript will soon be available under the title of Irenaeus on the Christian Faith. Payton′s book Turning Points in the History of Eastern Europe is also nearing publication.
Dr. Payton earned his Ph. D. in Intellectual History of Early Modern Europe from the University of Waterloo, and his Th. M. and M. Div. before that from the Westminster Theological Seminary. He received his bachelor′s and master′s degrees from Bob Jones University.
Geneva College hosts the Colloquia Series each semester to challenging students to be engaged in the world around them and to formulate principled Christian responses. The Colloquia Series is open to the campus community and the public at no charge.
The Calvin 500 is an event celebrating the life and work of John Calvin (1509-1564) one of the most influential leaders of the Protestant Reformation. Calvin spent much of his life working for religious and social reform in Geneva, Switzerland, the city from which Geneva College gets its name.
