Rochester, NY - After Saturday′s NCCAA eastern regional championship, it was easy to see how far the Geneva College women′s soccer team has come in a very short time. Last year, the Golden Tornadoes saw their season end with a 4-0 loss to Roberts Wesleyan in the NCCAA regional tournament. On Saturday, it took 12 penalty kicks after a scoreless double overtime session to come away with a decision. Unfortunately for Geneva and head coach Linda Sumner the result was the same as it was Roberts Wesleyan earning the victory and moving on to the NCCAA national tournament. Regulation and overtime ended in a 1-1 tie, but it was the Raiders who came out on top 7-6 in penalty kicks that lasted through 12 shooters for both teams.

Geneva opened the scoring on a goal from sophomore Rebecca Shaw and managed to maintain the one-goal cushion into the second half. Roberts Wesleyan tied the game with its only goal of the match and then the fun began as both teams headed into overtime. After a pair of ten minute overtime sessions, neither team could grab the game winner and the match was forced into penalty kicks. With Geneva shooting last, it had two chances to win the match but was unable to capitalize. Finally in the 12th round, Roberts Wesleyan scored and Geneva was unable to match it and lost a heartbreaker.

"I am extremely proud of our ladies," said head coach Linda Sumner. "We battled a very good NAIA program from start to finish and we have nothing to be ashamed of after this match. It would have been great to move on to the nationals, but this is some great experience for a young program."
