On November 13, Geneva students were dressed to the nines for the annual Film Fest, held in the Metheny Fieldhouse. Eight short films premiered at the red-carpet event, all of them written, directed, filmed and cast by Geneva students.
“Film Fest was amazing!” says sophomore Sarah Falk. “It was great getting to spend an evening all dressed up with friends and seeing the college community come together to enjoy the films.”
Seniors Julie Lohmann and Conlan Walsh hosted Film Fest and presented honors in a variety of categories. Joshua Donath′s film Harvey, about a lamp who lived as a student on Geneva′s campus, won the awards for Technical Editing as well as the coveted People′s Choice Award. The Best Storyline Award went to How Dancing Changed the World, a retelling of Footloose set at Geneva College. Junior Barnabas Prontnicki landed Best Actor for his role in Hindsight Bias, and the Best Actress Award went to the three leading ladies in a toes-only feature called Dorm Feet. Sophomore Jon Cosgrove received the Best Director award for his film Hallelujah.
Jon′s inspiration for Hallelujah came while he was listening to a playlist of songs expressing different aspects of love in different situations. “I wasn't originally planning on making it into a movie, because I knew I didn't have the skills or resources to make one of any quality. However, I eventually built up the nerve to show it to my friends, and they supported me, gave their own input, my roommate Dan did the filming and editing, and it eventually became Hallelujah! (The Shadow Proves the Sunshine).”
Jon adds that the most enjoyable part of the evening was seeing his friends′ hard work and dedication pay off, as well as having the opportunity to be “part of a trend to submit films that address powerful themes and attempts to do more than get laughs.”
