The Geneva College community now has access to a new piano which was donated by the Henry Mancini Musical Theatre committee in October.
“The baby grand piano that is currently in Geneva's dining hall has been on its last legs for several years,” says associate professor of music Louise Copeland. In its place, a Yamaha electric piano has been received and is now stationed in the Presidents' Dining Room.
Founded in 1994, the Henry Mancini Musical Theatre Awards program has been in existence for 16 years. Musical theater productions from high schools in Beaver, Butler and Lawrence Counties are judged each spring and awards are given out at a ceremony in May. Every year there are fourteen schools administered to participate in the program. Because Geneva College is involved in enhancing the arts in Western Pennsylvania, the college has assisted by hosting the ceremony here on campus for just over 10 years. Last year the program had a small profit and the committee decided to give something back to Geneva as a thank you for their involvement over the years.
“We trust it will greatly enhance the music heard for programs in the dining hall,” says Copeland. “It will be useful for many years to come.” The piano can easily be rolled anywhere in the dining commons, and will not have to be tuned.
