Grove City, PA - Geneva head coach Jeff Santarsiero knew the run was coming from Grove City, but it was just a matter of time. The Wolverines did put a late run together, but it was too little, too late as the Golden Tornadoes held on for a 53-50 victory to move their overall record to 8-7. Matching their entire win total from a year ago, Geneva won for the third straight time and in the process put an end to its five game losing streak against Grove City.
"I have so much respect for our guys," said Santarsiero. "They battled a very good team and won in a very difficult place." It was the first time in five years that Geneva managed to beat the Wolverines on the road and the first victory overall since 2006. The win appeared to be much easier as Geneva opened up a 12-point lead with seven minutes remaining in the second half. Free throws from Rich Colick and Brandon Harvey in the last minute helped seal the deal. Grove City did what it could to rally but a three-point field goal with one second left cut the lead to three and Geneva was able to run out the clock.
"Our defense won the game," said Santarsiero. "We made it very difficult for them to get many open looks and we made shots when it counted." Rich Colick led the Geneva offensive attack with 13 points and 13 rebounds. The Golden Tornadoes got ten points from Lambros Svingos and nine from Brandon Harvey. Sophomore T.J. Bevilacqua scored all eight of his points in the second half, including a pair of three point field goals to help extend the Geneva lead in the second half.
Geneva will look to extend its win streak to four games on Saturday afternoon when it visits Westminster for a 4 pm tip-off. The Golden Tornadoes return home next Wednesday to host Waynesburg.
