Beaver Falls, PA - On Saturday, the Geneva College men′s basketball team surpassed its win total from all of last year. On Wednesday night, the Golden Tornadoes moved their win streak to five games making it the longest such streak since 2004. Geneva defeated Waynesburg on Wednesday night by the score of 75-56 to improve its record to 10-7. The Golden Tornadoes led by as many as 30 points in the second half before allowing the Yellowjackets to make things interesting when they cut the lead to 16 points in the final five minutes of play.
"I am not overly thrilled with our effort," said head coach Jeff Santarsiero. "We did not play anything close to a 40 minute game and Waynesburg kept battling all night. We have to be much better the second half of the season if we hope to keep rolling."
Despite the head coach′s frustration, Geneva did win in convincing fashion in a game in which it never trailed. Geneva took a 21 point lead to halftime at 40-19 after holding Waynesburg to only six first half field goals and a shooting percentage of 26%. "We gave a very good defensive effort for about 30 minutes," said Santarsiero. Waynesburg didn′t do itself any favors by missing all nine three point attempts in the first half and finishing the game with a mark of 1-15. Meanwhile, Geneva knocked down seven three-point field goals including three from Bryan Hill.
Rich Colick was Geneva′s only scorer in double figures as he reached his average for the season with a team best 17 points. Hill and Brandon Harvey each added nine in the victory as Geneva enjoyed scoring from 12 different players. Waynesburg got a game high 18 points from Jeff Young in a losing cause.
"We have enjoyed a very solid first half of the conference schedule and now it only gets tougher the rest of the way."
Geneva will open that second half on Saturday afternoon at 3 pm when it welcomes Washington & Jefferson to Metheny Fieldhouse.
