Waynesburg, PA - Anything that can go wrong will go wrong. That is not exactly the saying any college coach would like to go by on any given night. Unfortunately, for the Geneva College women′s basketball team and head coach Renee Drake that is the only way to describe the season finale at Waynesburg on Saturday night. Geneva dropped a 76-52 decision to Waynesburg and fell to 8-17 on the season after having defeated the Yellowjackets by 20 points in the first meeting between the two schools in January. Losing the season finale and dropping the last three games of the season was bad enough, but when your bus gets stuck and your team shows up ten minutes before the scheduled tip time, it may not be your night.

The bus carrying the men′s and women′s teams to Waynesburg got stuck in a restaurant parking lot and forced the women′s team to scramble during the pre-game warm-up. "We are not about excuses," said head coach Renee Drake. "It certainly wasn′t the ideal situation for our ladies, but we just didn′t play very well from start to finish and we have nobody to blame but ourselves."

Whether the late arrival was a factor or not, the Golden Tornadoes certainly did not get off to a good start as Waynesburg out scored Geneva 36-23 in the first half. The Golden Tornadoes managed only seven first half field goals on 26 attempts while also being outrebounded 24-15 in the first 20 minutes.

Any hopes of turning things around in the second half were quickly thwarted by Waynesburg as the Yellowjackets doubled their lead to 55-29 just eight minutes into the second half. The final 12 minutes was played evenly but the damage had already been done. "It′s easy to get frustrated when you look at our final record and how things finished tonight," said Drake. "Honestly our record is not indicative of the talent in our program. We have a lot to build on for the future and our ladies should be excited for what lies ahead for Geneva basketball."

Geneva′s Rachel Barry was the only player to reach double figures with 13 points while Beth DeLuca posted nine points in the loss. Renee Rawding, Geneva′s ninth all-time leading scorer, and Liz DiPietro each played their final game for the Golden Tornadoes. "This was not a great way for our seniors to end their careers," said Drake. "But we have enjoyed some great times with both Liz and Renee."
