Waynesburg, PA - The Geneva College men′s basketball team closed out the regular season with an impressive 99-68 victory over Waynesburg University on Saturday night. The Golden Tornadoes improved to 14-11 while the Yellowjackets fell to 2-23 on the season. Geneva hopes its back to back victories to end the regular season will serve as momentum as it prepares to open play in the NCCAA east regional tournament. The Golden Tornadoes will likely open the regional tournament at home this week when they host Roberts Wesleyan College at Metheny Fieldhouse. "We always want to be playing our best basketball at the end of the season and tonight we were pretty solid in all phases," said head coach Jeff Santarsiero.
Geneva′s offense posted a season best 99 points and was led by junior Rich Colick. Colick entered action averaging close to 18 points per game and was able to pass his average in the first 20 minutes. Colick scored 22 of his season high 32 points in the first half. He also grabbed a team high 13 rebounds in the win.Teammate Lambros Svingos added a season high 20 points to help Geneva cruise past Waynesburg.
In a game that Geneva controlled throughout the night, Waynesburg only led briefly in the first half before the Golden Tornadoes took control of the game and never looked back. "It is never easy to win on the road and playing a team that has nothing to lose can be a scary proposition," said Santarsiero. "We were able to take the crowd out of the game early and play good, solid basketball for 40 minutes. We got contributions from a lot of guys and it was nice to have some breathing room down the stretch."
The Golden Tornadoes will most likely be facing old American Mideast Conference foe Roberts Wesleyan in the regional semi-finals. Roberts Wesleyan was officially eliminated from the AMC tournament on Saturday which in turn opened its schedule up to travel to Geneva sometime next week. The winner of the Geneva/Roberts Wesleyan match-up will likely take on Nyack for the right to compete at the NCCAA national tournament in mid-March. "Our goal all year was to play games after the regular season," said Santarsiero. "We have our work cut out against a very good team but we are excited for the opportunity."
