John Taylor GattoAs part of Geneva College′s spring colloquia series, John Taylor Gatto will speak on Thursday, February 18 at 7 p.m. and on Friday, February 19 at 10:10 a.m. Gatto will present in the Geneva College Student Center′s Skye Lounge and both lectures are open to the public. A longtime teacher and native of western Pennsylvania, Gatto was selected as New York City Teacher of the Year in 1989, 1990 and 1991, and New York State Teacher of the Year in 1991.

Gatto is a well-known advocate of school reform, having traveled internationally to raise awareness about the shortcomings of the American compulsory education system. He is the author of numerous books, including Dumbing Us Down: The Hidden Curriculum of Compulsory Schooling, The Exhausted School, A Different Kind of Teacher: Solving the Crisis of American Schooling, The Underground History of American Education, Weapons of Mass Instruction: A Schoolteacher's Journey through the Dark World of Compulsory Schooling, and Against School.

Gatto has studied at Cornell University, the University of Pittsburgh, and Columbia University. Following service in the U.S. Army, he has done graduate work at the City University of New York, Hunter College, Yeshiva University, the University of California, and Cornell University.
