Kissimmee, FL - Two games with the same negative outcome for the Geneva softball team on Saturday were reached in two very different ways. One out away from victory in game one, the Golden Tornadoes dropped a 4-3 extra inning decision to Staten Island. In the night cap, Geneva fell behind early and lost 8-0 to Trine University in five innings. The doubleheader loss dropped Geneva′s overall record to 3-5 during its Florida swing which will be completed on Monday.
Julie DiLonardo allowed just two hits and struck out ten batters but was handed the hard luck loss. The second of two Staten Island hits came with two outs in the bottom of the eighth which scored a pair of runs to steal the victory from Geneva. The Golden Tornadoes had taken a 3-2 lead in the top of the eighth on a Leanne Abate RBI double. Adriane Blake′s fielder′s choice and Lexi Svingos′ double plated Geneva′s first two runs of the game. Geneva yielded an unearned run in the sixth that tied the game and eventually sent it into extra innings.
The night cap was much less competitive as Trine plated five runs in the second to break the game open. Three more runs in the fifth instituted the mercy rule as Geneva dropped to 3-5 on the season. The Golden Tornadoes managed just three hits in the night cap.
Geneva will play Nichols College and Rutgers-Camden on Monday before heading back to Beaver Falls.
