Hiram, OH - Coaches love to see how teams respond to adversity. For the second time in as many doubleheaders the Geneva College softball team rallied for a game two victory to salvage a doubleheader split. Golden Tornadoes dropped game one against Hiram 2-0 before coming back for a 10-3 win in the night cap. The split left Geneva′s overall record at 5-9.

Game one was dominated by pitching as Geneva managed just three hits while sophomore Julie DiLonardo held Hiram to just six hits but it was the sixth and final hit the proved most costly. A two-run double with one out in the bottom of the sixth plated the game′s only two runs. DiLonardo struck out three but picked up the hard luck loss. Offensively, Geneva had just three hits including back to back singles from Leanne Abate and Sam Bautista in the fourth but the rally came up empty.

Game two looked very familiar for four innings as the Geneva offense was kept in check falling behind 3-0 heading into the sixth The Golden Tornadoes batted around in the sixth scoring seven runs on four hits. Geneva took advantage of a pair of Hiram errors and got a two-run double off the bat of Bautista to cap off the rally. Sam Michetti and Martha Adams picked up RBI hits in the seventh to give Geneva some insurance. Adams started for Geneva and went four innings before Jenny Barrett posted a scoreless fifth inning. Barrett picked up her first collegiate victory with DiLonardo closing out the victory with two scoreless innings of relief.

Geneva will travel to Penn State Beaver on Wednesday before the home opener next Saturday against Ursuline.
