Greenville, PA - Most baseball games begin and end with pitching. On Friday, the Geneva College baseball team got behind the eight-ball early as starter Matt Baer experienced elbow pain after just one inning and was forced to leave a 1-1 game in the second inning. Thiel College took advantage of Baer′s absence as it pounded out a total of 26 hits in a 23-9 victory over the Golden Tornadoes. Geneva dropped to 14-20 on the season with just a doubleheader against Thiel on Saturday left on the schedule.

The Golden Tornadoes jumped on the board in the first inning on a Justin Acosta RBI single. Acosta struck again in the second as he highlighted a three-run rally with a two-run single to give Geneva a 4-1 lead. Thiel grabbed the lead right back with four runs in the bottom of the second off Geneva reliever Ryan Nolt. After Thiel scored a single tally in third inning, the Tomcats broke the game open with ten runs in the bottom of the fourth to open up a 16-4 advantage.

The Golden Tornadoes tried to battle back with five runs over the next three innings but it wasn′t enough. Adam Scheiderer blasted a two-run homer in the fifth and Phil Shallenberger plated another run with a base hit in the sixth. Geneva had 11 hits in the loss including three hits and three RBI′s from senior Justin Acosta. Jon Jurinko, Scheiderer and Bryan Visingardi each had two hits.

Geneva will get another shot at Thiel on the final day of the season coming up on Saturday. The Golden Tornadoes and Tomcats will square off in a 1 pm doubleheader. Geneva will send seniors Phil Shallenberger and Dylan Viehdorfer to mound for the final time in their Geneva careers.
