Miller's book: Hope in a Scattering Time
Eric Miller

Dr.  Eric Miller, Geneva College professor of history, has recently published his book, Hope in a Scattering Time: A Life of Christopher Lasch (Eerdmans, 2010). The volume is the first biography of Christopher Lasch, historian, social critic and author of The Culture of Narcissism.

“Above all, I hope readers will encounter a thinker and writer whose understanding of our world and our times still merits close attention,” Miller says. “I also hope the book provides occasion for readers to consider an image that has largely gone out of fashion: the intellectual life as a moral drama.  As a culture, we've once more lost the conviction that how we think about the world is of prime, fundamental importance.”

The biography has received positive reviews from a number of national sources. Alan Wolfe of The New Republic says,“This is anything but a quickly written effort to explore the relationship between a thinker and his times. Miller has not only dug deeply, he has also pondered carefully.  . . . I never met the man, but thanks to this book I now feel that I have. I could not be more grateful to Miller for facilitating the introduction."

Miller has a Ph.D. in American History from the University of Delaware, and currently serves as a professor of history and humanities at Geneva College. He is co-editor of the book Confessing History: Explorations in Christian Faith and the Historian's Vocation (University of Notre Dame Press, 2010), which will be published this fall, and he has been published in various magazines, including Christianity Today.
