Beaver Falls, PA - The Geneva College tennis team won more matches in 2009 than it had in the past 12 years. On Wednesday, the Golden Tornadoes picked right up where they left off with a 5-4 victory over Chatham University at Brady′s Run Park.

Chatham jumped out to a 2-1 lead with victories in two of the three doubles matches. The lone Geneva victory in doubles was delivered by the duo of Maura McLauglin and Alyssa Kuhn by the scores of 8-4. Geneva′s top doubles tandem of Chelsea Cover and Kara Zimmerman dropped a tough 9-7 decision. Zimmerman made up for it with a win in number two singles by the scores of 6-1 and 6-3. Alison Beattie, making her collegiate debut for Geneva, picked up a 6-2, 6-0 win in number three singles. Amy Weller won her singles match and Cassandra Califf closed out the victory with a 6-2, 6-2 win in singles.

Weller′s victory proved to be the difference as she managed to prevail in a tiebreaking victory by the score of 7-4. All other matches were decided in two sets, but Weller went the extra frame to pick up the victory for the Golden Tornadoes.

Geneva will travel to Saint Vincent College to take on the Bearcats on Friday afternoon. The Golden Tornadoes return home on September 10th to take on Grove City.
