Beaver Falls, PA - New men′s soccer coach Gary Dunda was not extremely pleased with the effort of the Golden Tornadoes in the first 45 minutes on Wednesday night against Point Park. Whatever speech he gave at halftime, he may want to save for later because it sparked his team to three second half goals in a 4-1 victory over Point Park University. The win moved Geneva to 2-0-1 while the Pioneers fell for the first time in dropping their record to 3-1.
Despite some sluggish play in the first half, Geneva scored the lone goal when Jeb Nash ripped a 30 yard shot into the corner of the net for his first goal of the season in the 32nd minute of play. Point Park tied the game just two minutes into the second half on an Alex Sala connection. "We were having trouble opening up the field in the first half," said Dunda. "The key to our second half success was Josh Mann holding the ball in the middle of the field. It enabled us to open up space on the outside and we took advantage." Mann didn′t tally a goal but he certainly made his presence felt. Kenton Burckhart scored on a direct kick from 25 yards out in the 63rd minute to give Geneva the lead for good. Teddy Kryswiecki scored his second goal of the season and Jacob Merrill hammered home his first collegiate goal in the final minute to put the icing on the cake of an impressive victory.
"We are a very deep team," said Dunda. "We are getting contributions from a lot of guys and we just wore them down in the second half." Evan Biedenbach picked up his second victory of the season with four saves in the contest.
Geneva will travel to Mt. Union College on Saturday before returning home next Saturday against Heidelberg at 7:30 pm.
