Beaver Falls, PA - The Geneva College volleyball team knew that Thiel College was better than its 7-7 overall record indicated. In fact, the Golden Tornadoes were prepared for a lengthy battle with one of the more talented teams in the Presidents′ Athletic Conference. Geneva got exactly what it expected as the two teams battled for five games with the Golden Tornadoes coming out on top 3-2 by scores of 26-24, 25-20, 23-25, 18-25, 15-13. The victory was Geneva′s fifth straight and improved its overall record to 14-2.
Geneva took control of the match early by winning the first two games, but not before having to hold off a charging Tomcats team late in game one. The momentum shifted in game three with Thiel beginning its long comeback. The Golden Tornadoes managed to maintain a three point edge in game five before the Tomcats again rallied to tie the score at 13 each. An Adriane Blake killed followed by a match point that featured a Thiel player going into the net proved to be the difference in the match.
Blake came into the match leading the PAC in kills and she didn′t disappoint on this night. The senior outside hitter posted a career high 29 kills in outdueling Thiel′s Kelly Barzak, who came in as the PAC′s number two player in kills. Blake got a lot of help as Geneva posted four players with double digit kills for the first time all season. In addition to Blake, Rachel Kuegler (13), Maggie Bowersox (11) and Laura Zerbe (10) each had solid nights. Deanna Briody was the freshman setter putting the ball in the air all night as she registered a career best 58 assists in the victory. Kuegler also led her Geneva teammates with 35 digs.
Geneva ends its four match home stand with wins in all four and leaves Metheny Fieldhouse with a perfect 6-0 record heading to the road for nine consecutive matches beginning with Waynesburg and Thomas More on Saturday. The Golden Tornadoes don′t return home until October 20th to face Waynesburg.
