Pittsburgh, PA - The Geneva College volleyball team is getting close to making some history of its own. The Golden Tornadoes won a pair of matches on Wednesday and improved their overall record to 18-2 and in the process moved their current win streak to nine matches. With a 3-1 victory over Bethany and a 3-0 whitewash of Chatham, the Golden Tornadoes got within two victories of the best start in school history. In 1976, the Geneva volleyball team finished the season with a 20-2 overall record and the 2010 edition is moving closer to that record number.
In the first match of the day, Geneva dropped the first game to Bethany 25-22 before rallying to win the next three by scores of 27-25, 25-23, 25-20. The duo of Adriane Blake and Rachel Kuegler each came up with 16 kills while Maggie Bowersox chipped in with 13 kills. Blake added five blocks while Kuegler had a team best 17 digs. Freshman setter Deanna Briody led the way with 49 assists in the game one victory.
Match number two came a bit easier as Geneva cruised to a 3-0 win against Chatham by scores of 25-16, 25-23, 25-20. Kristland McCracken had 14 kills and 12 digs to lead the way while freshman Ashley Davis added eight kills in the victory. Briody was again on top of her game with 41 assists.
Geneva′s day opened equally as successful with Adriane Blake being named a co-NCCAA national player of the week. During Geneva′s perfect 3-0 week, Blake averaged 4.62 kills and 3.54 digs per game with a hitting percentage of .267. She threw down a career best 29 kills in Geneva′s five set victory over Thiel College last Tuesday.
