Muschette Already Among All-Time Greats

Beaver Falls, PA - Geneva College is celebrating its 120th season of football this year and along the way has enjoyed the talents of several stars. The Geneva record book goes back a long way and includes players that dawned the Geneva uniform in the 19th century. So having a current player be listed among the all-time greats is certainly quite an achievement, but also the farthest thing from the mind of one Gerard Muschette.

The senior running back from Lusby, Md has put himself into the mix among the all-time greats at Geneva College. Last Saturday, Muschette put on quite a show for a capacity homecoming crowd in setting a personal best with five touchdowns in Geneva′s loss to Waynesburg. Coming into the season, he needed to put together a nearly ridiculous season to have an opportunity to break Geneva′s all-time rushing record. Don′t look now, but ridiculous is right around the corner. With still much work to do, Muschette has at least entered the conversation of becoming Geneva′s all-time leading rusher. With four games remaining on the regular season schedule, Muschette has 3,112 career rushing yards and sits 697 yards away from Melvin Cobbs′ record of 3,809. With only 528 career carries, Muschette is already in the top spot all-time with an average of 5.89 yards per carry. Even more impressive is his 39 career touchdowns, which is only two shy of Cobbs′ all-time mark.

"These records are not something on the top of my priority list," says Muschette. "Everything I achieve on the field is through a team effort. Maybe when I′m finished playing, I will look back at what all was accomplished, but right now I am focused on winning football games."

Muschette and his Geneva teammates will look to get back into the win column on Saturday night at Grove City College when they meet the Wolverines at 7 pm. The good news for Geneva is that it is a perfect 3-0 on the road this year. However, the home record is 0-3 and the Golden Tornadoes will welcome perennial powerhouse Washington & Jefferson College to Reeves Field a week from Saturday.

As for Muschette, it will hopefully be business as usual on Saturday night. If his effort against Grove City a year ago is any indication, he could be in for another memorable night. In the 2009 edition of Geneva and Grove City, the Golden Tornadoes won 34-17 with Muschette picking up 219 yards on 17 carries and three touchdowns. With three touchdowns this Saturday, Muschette will put himself in a class by himself with the record for the most touchdowns in 120 years of Geneva football.

"Graduation day is always a fun and exciting day on our campus," says head coach Geno DeMarco. "In the case of Gerard Muschette, it is not going to be a very fun day for me or for the Geneva College football fans in the region. He is a once in a lifetime type of student-athlete and he is an even better person off the field. Every accolade that comes his way is well deserved and he will be sorely missed next year."
