Washington, PA - One of the signs that a program has taken the next step in becoming a perennial contender is when its coaches are not very happy even when the team comes away with a victory. Such was the case on Wednesday night when the Geneva College women′s volleyball team won for the tenth straight time in defeating Washington & Jefferson 3-1 by scores of 26-24, 17-25, 27-25, 25-20. Despite the winning streak hitting double digits and their overall record moving to 19-2 on the season, the Golden Tornadoes were far from being at the top of their game on Wednesday night.
A somewhat frustrated co-head coach Curt Conser described the night as some of the ugliest ball we′ve played in a while. Despite the flashes of ugliness, Geneva did manage to move to within one victory of matching the best start in school history when the 1975 Geneva team went 20-2. In addition, the Golden Tornadoes are now just four wins shy of matching the single season record of 23 victories set in 1986.
On the court, Rachel Kuegler led the offense with 13 kills with PAC kills leader Adriane Blake checking in with ten kills on the night. Maggie Bowersox was also effective with seven kills in the victory. Deanna Briody finished the match with 38 assists to go along with 14 digs and a team best three service aces. On defense, Brianna Mixter led the Golden Tornadoes with 22 digs.
Geneva will try to get back to its top form for its biggest weekend of the season. The Golden Tornadoes head to Rochester, NY on Friday to compete in the NCCAA East regional tournament. Geneva will play Roberts Wesleyan and Malone on Friday before facing Nyack and Mt. Vernon Nazarene on Saturday. The winner of the regional tournament receives an automatic bid to the NCCAA national tournament, which would be a first for Geneva College. The Golden Tornadoes don′t return to Metheny Fieldhouse until October 20th the face Waynesburg University.
