Rochester, NY - The good news for the Geneva College women′s volleyball team is that it matched some history on Friday night by opening the season with a 20-2 record. With its opening round 3-1 victory over Roberts Wesleyan, the Golden Tornadoes won their 11th straight and matched the best start in school history at 20-2 with the 1975 Geneva team. The bad news came in the night cap as Geneva′s win streak came to an end with a 3-0 loss to Malone University in the second match of the NCCAA East Regional tournament. With an overall record of 20-3 and a 1-1 mark within the regional, the Golden Tornadoes will get two more cracks at an automatic bid to the NCCAA national tournament on Saturday with matches against Nyack and Mt. Vernon Nazarene.

Sitting now just three wins shy of the single season school record of 23, the Golden Tornadoes will look to Saturday to begin a new winning streak. In the first match of the day, Geneva defeated Roberts Wesleyan by scores of 25-19, 25-19, 11-25, 25-10. After watching the Raiders get back into the match in game three, Geneva cruised past Roberts in the fourth and deciding game thanks mostly by the serving of Brianna Mixter. Mixter closed out the match with 11 straight service points including a stretch of three straight aces.

At the net, Adriane Blake led the way with 12 kills with Rachel Kuegler adding ten and Maggie Bowersox chipping in with seven. Bowersox also came away with a team best four blocks. Mixter had a team best 18 digs while Deanna Briody led the way with 36 assists.

Malone, the number four ranked team in the NCCAA, gave quite a performance in the night cap. The Pioneers defeated Geneva in three straight games by scores of 25-17, 25-20, 25-15. Blake had ten kills and Kuegler had nine but it was not nearly enough to slow down Malone′s attack.

On Saturday, Geneva must sweep matches against Nyack and Mt. Vernon to have an opportunity to win the tournament and gain an automatic bid to the NCCAA nationals in Florida in November.
