Beaver Falls, PA - In some cases statistics don′t tell the whole story of a football game. On Saturday night, the statistic sheet certainly did not match up with the final score. Geneva College played out played and out gained Washington & Jefferson in almost every phase of the game but came up on the short end of a 22-16 decision to the President′s in front of 5785 patrons at Reeves Field. The loss was Geneva′s third straight and dropped the Golden Tornadoes to 3-5 including a winless 0-4 mark on their home turf. Meanwhile, W & J kept their slim play-off hopes alive in moving to 5-2 on the year.

The early script could not have been written any better for Geneva as its offense took the opening kick-off and drove 77 yards on 11 plays capped by an eight yard touchdown reception from David Girardi to Corey O′Patchen. Midway through the first quarter, W & J tied the game before the first of three Nick DiPietro field goals put Geneva up 10-7 at the 13:02 mark of the second quarter. Another W & J score followed by a 27 yard DiPietro kick sent the game into the locker room with W & J clinging to a 14-13 lead.

DiPietro′s 36 yard field goal was the only scoring of the third quarter as the Golden Tornadoes took a 16-14 lead into the fourth quarter. Ben Hoffer′s 16 yard reception and subsequent two-point reception gave the President′s a 22-16 lead with 12:32 to play in the fourth quarter.

Geneva had a pair of fourth quarter drives stalled before taking its final possession down to the 14 yard line with 16 seconds remaining in the game. Girardi′s last pass ended up in defensive back Craig Sedunov′s hands in the end zone and the President′s were able to ice the game away. "Statistics don′t mean anything," said Geneva head coach Geno DeMarco. "The only numbers that matter are the ones on the scoreboard at the end of the game and we didn′t have enough points. Our guys played hard and did a lot of good things. I believe it was our most complete football game but we are interested in winning games not out gaining teams."

Geneva′s Gerard Muschette put on another impressive display for the home crowd. The senior running back carried the ball a personal best 39 times for 212 yards. He surpassed the 200 yard mark for the third time this season. He was held out of the end zone for just the second time this season and remains one touchdowns shy of tying Geneva′s all-time record of 41 touchdowns. Through the air, Girardi was 18-37 for 130 yards and a touchdown.

Geneva′s defense was stellar for the second week in a row allowing three W & J touchdown drives, all of which started on the Geneva side of the field. Held to only 168 total yards, W & J had 56 yards rushing on 29 carries for an average of less than two yards a rush. Chance Kelosky led the defense with six tackles with Adam Rose, Tucker Nuetzel and Marcus Costanza each having five tackles in the loss.

Geneva heads back to the road next Saturday when it travels to Thiel College for a 1 pm start. The Golden Tornadoes close out the regular season on November 13th when they host Westminster at 1 pm.
