Pittsburgh, PA - For 20 minutes, the Geneva women′s basketball team was playing the way head coach Renee Drake had wanted it to all of last year. The Golden Tornadoes were limiting their turnovers and were playing efficient on the offensive end of the court. Taking a 31-31 tie into the locker room against Penn State Beaver, Geneva was unable to maintain its high level and dropped a 67-51 decision to Penn State Beaver in the opening night of the LaRoche College tournament. The Golden Tornadoes fell to 0-1 in the curtain opener with a match-up against Penn State Greater Allegheny slated for Tuesday night.

Geneva managed only eight second half field goals to go along with 15 turnovers in the final 20 minutes after shooting a solid 38% from the field in the first half. Senior forward Valerie Hamilton scored a team high 13 points on 6-12 shooting while Beth DeLuca chipped in with ten points including a pair of three-point field goals. "We did some good things in the first half," said Drake. "We just were not able to maintain our offensive focus when they picked up the defensive pressure. It really came down to turnovers and rebounding and we just didn′t match up."

By the numbers, the Lions only held a five rebound edge over the Golden Tornadoes but Geneva had no answers for Shelby Parks who posted ten points and nine rebounds, including six boards on the offensive end of the court.

Geneva was just 3-3 from the foul line in the entire game while Penn State hit on 13-22 from the charity stripe in 40 minutes. The ten point edge at the foul line also played a huge role in the outcome of the game.

The Golden Tornadoes face Penn State Greater Allegheny on Tuesday before returning to Metheny Fieldhouse for the home opener on Saturday night in a rematch against Penn State Beaver at 7 pm.
