Pittsburgh, PA - It certainly didn′t take long for the Geneva College women′s basketball team to recover from Monday night′s season opening loss to Penn State Beaver. Just 24 hours later, the Golden Tornadoes cruised to a 73-30 victory over Penn State Greater Allegheny on day two of the LaRoche College tournament. Geneva evened its early season record to 1-1 while Penn State dropped to 0-5.

If defense wins games then Tuesday night was a perfect example of how to win a college basketball game. The Golden Tornadoes held PSGA to only two field goals in the first half in opening up a 42-5 halftime lead. Geneva shot 45% from the field in the first 20 minutes and never looked back. The Golden Tornadoes committed just 14 turnovers after giving up the ball 25 times on Monday night. Defensively, Geneva forced 30 turnovers for the game and was able to capitalize on offense off of those turnovers. "It was nice to get a win but we still have a lot of work to do," said head coach Renee Drake. We did a better job on both ends of the floor but we are far from perfect."

Freshman forward Samantha Fisher picked up a double-double in just her second collegiate game with 11 points and ten rebounds off the bench. In fact, Geneva got scoring from all but one player on its roster on Tuesday night. Fisher and Valerie Hamilton matched the team high with 11 points each. Another freshman, Mary Keen, chipped in with nine points off the bench while teammates Beth DeLuca and Alyse Scarsella each posted eight points in the victory.

PSGA picked things up offensively in the second half after scoring just five points in the first 20 minutes. For the game, Geneva held Penn State to 24% shooting from the field while shooting 45% on the other end of the floor. The Golden Tornadoes still need to improve their long distance shooting as they connected on just 2-14 from behind the arc. "We have to shoot the ball better if we are going to compete in the PAC," said Drake. "I think we will have a solid post game, but we have to get production from our back court."

The Golden Tornadoes return to Beaver Falls for their home opener on Saturday night when they get a rematch with Penn State Beaver after falling to the Lions by 16 points on Monday night.
