Pittsburgh, PA - Protecting the basketball is one of the main focus points for Geneva College women′s basketball coach Renee Drake. In the early season the trend appears to be quite simple for the Golden Tornadoes. If Geneva limits its turnovers, it has a great chance to win the game. When the turnovers add up against the Golden Tornadoes, the results have been much different. On Tuesday night, Geneva committed 31 turnovers in a 76-45 loss at Point Park University. The loss dropped Geneva back to 2-2 for the season with both losses featuring at least 25 turnovers.
"The recipe for us is pretty simple," said Drake. "When we don′t cherish the ball, bad things are going to happen. We just didn′t have enough opportunities on the offensive side of the floor because we didn′t protect the ball. Point Park held Geneva to 34% shooting from the field while forcing those 31 turnovers. The Pioneers jumped on Geneva early and took a 44-26 lead into the locker room. In the second half, the offense continued to struggle with only 19 points and eight field goals in the final 20 minutes. "We could never get any type of rhythm going because of their pressure defense. It was a good learning experience for us and gives us a lot to work on in the next few days."
Beth DeLuca led the Golden Tornadoes with 13 points on 5-10 shooting from the field. Alyse Scarsella scored five points but led all players with 12 rebounds in the game. Point Park got a game high 19 points from Ashley Henderson and 16 points from Joncelyn Peterkin.
The Golden Tornadoes return to Metheny Fieldhouse on Saturday afternoon at 4 pm to host Fredonia State University.
