Geneva College hosted 35 Pittsburgh Promise students on Friday, October 29, 2010. The students toured the campus, ate lunch in Alexander Hall and enjoyed a lecture by Dr. Brad Frey of the sociology department.

The Pittsburgh Promise is a college scholarship program that benefits students graduating from the Pittsburgh Public Schools or one of its charter high schools. Their vision is for students who receive scholarships to be given an opportunity to pursue college and then continue to serve in the city of Pittsburgh. The Pittsburgh promise desires to ensure economic and social stability, discourage population loss, attract families to Pittsburgh and produce the qualified workers that businesses need in order to grow and prosper in Pittsburgh. Geneva is partnering with the Pittsburgh Promise by accepting their students and scholarships.

Shaquille Daniel, a student at Perry Traditional Academy on the North Side said, “The Pittsburgh Promise will open doors. I think people should take advantage of it.” He enjoyed his visit at Geneva and mentioned, “I like the student to professor ratio.”

The Pittsburgh Promise students toured 11 campuses in addition to Geneva. Students had to wake up at 6:30 a.m. to begin their tour. Outreach Coordinator of the Pittsburgh Promise Amirah said, “This way students can take a look at colleges and see them before they apply … No students had to do this, they came on their own initiative. These are individuals of all different backgrounds who realized what the Promise has to offer.” Amirah also enjoyed her visit to Geneva saying, “It′s been very welcoming with lots of opportunities and a central location.”
