Geneva Greater Than Penn State

McKeesport, PA - The first time Geneva′s women′s basketball team met up with Penn State Greater Allegheny back in November, the Golden Tornadoes cruised to nearly a 50-point victory. On Thursday night, the two teams hooked up again with a similar result, but it didn′t come quite so easily. Geneva did pick up the victory by the score of 70-45 but after leading by only nine points at halftime. The victory pushed Geneva′s early season record to 5-3 while PSGA remained winless at 0-10.

Penn State kept itself in the game with a 50% shooting mark from the field in the first 20 minutes, including a 3-4 mark from long range. Meanwhile, the Golden Tornadoes knocked down four treys of their own to maintain the lead. After Penn State cut the lead to seven with the first bucket of the second half, Geneva scored the next 16 points to open the lead up to 52-29 at the 13:12 mark.

"We allowed them to get some open looks in the first half," said head coach Renee Drake. "We picked our defense up in the second half and were able to maintain some balance on offense. It was important to play well in the second half to gain some momentum for the weekend."

Geneva gets back into PAC play on Saturday when it hosts Bethany College at 5:30 pm at Metheny Fieldhouse. On this night, junior Alyse Scarsella led the way with 20 points on 10-13 shooting from the field. Jasman Papa came off the bench and scored a career best 12 points in 22 minutes of action. She connected on 5-10 shots and posted seven rebounds. Kristland McCracken led the Golden Tornadoes with eight rebounds in the game. "It was a nice balanced attack and everyone got a chance to contribute. Hopefully we can build off of this and finish the first half strong on Saturday night."
