Washington, PA - If Geneva College women′s basketball coach Renee Drake could find a way to bottle her team′s first half efforts in recent games and then be sure each of her players match their production in the second half, the Golden Tornadoes would be much better off than what they are 17 games into the season. On Saturday afternoon, Geneva fell into the same trap as a four-point halftime lead ballooned out of control and ended up as a 70-53 loss at Washington & Jefferson. The Golden Tornadoes fell for the fourth consecutive game and for the sixth time in seven games as they dropped to 7-10 on the season.

Playing toe to toe with the President′s for the first 20 minutes, Geneva led by as many as five points in the first stanza before heading to the locker room trailing 31-27. But much like so many games of late, the Golden Tornadoes watched W & J take control of the game early in the second half. The President′s scored the first eight points of the second half and eventually built a lead of 22 points before settling for a 17-point victory. "Our offensive problems are really a result of shot selection," said Drake. "There have been several key moments in recent games where we just can′t get a good shot and we settle for a low percentage opportunity. The second half problems today were a result of poor defense. But give W & J credit for taking advantage of some chances around the basket and finishing plays in the paint."

Geneva attempted 24 three-point field goals in the game and shot 25% from beyond the arc. Beth DeLuca made three of the six three-point field goals and finished with 17 points. Alyse Scarsella led the Golden Tornadoes with 18 points and 11 rebounds in registering her second double-double of the season. Geneva hit on only seven field goals in the second half and shot 27% from the field in the final 20 minutes as W & J took control of the game. "We allowed them to get an early run in the second half and they were able to built off of that momentum and never allowed us back into the game," said Drake. "We need to right this ship sooner than later because we will not allow ourselves to settle for anything less."

Geneva will look to right that ship on Wednesday night when it returns home to host Thiel College. The Golden Tornadoes head to Bethany next Saturday afternoon for a 2 pm date with the Bison.
