Beaver Falls, PA - The Geneva College women′s basketball team has just one chance remaining on the schedule to pick up a home victory. After starting the season with three straight wins at Metheny Fieldhouse, the Golden Tornadoes have not dropped seven straight on their home floor following a 60-48 loss to Chatham University. The loss dropped Geneva to 8-14 on the season while Chatham improved to 9-13.
Geneva managed only seven first half field goals but trailed by only two points at 23-21 with four minutes remaining in the first stanza. Chatham scored the final eight points of the half; including a three-point field goal at the buzzer to take a 31-21 lead into the break.
For most of the second half, the lead stayed at or around ten points until the Golden Tornadoes made a run late in the half. Trailing by as many as 13 points in the second half, Geneva managed to twice cut the lead down to only three. A Christine Carugati lay-up with 3:01 left to play cut the lead to 51-48. Following a Chatham timeout, the Cougars knocked down back to back three-point field goals in 38 seconds to quickly stretch the lead back to nine points. Geneva would not be able to recover in the final minutes.
Lizz King proved to be a handful for Geneva as she knocked down five three point field goals in the first half including the first 12 points of the game. She also put the nail in the coffin with her sixth trey of the game with just under two minutes left in regulation. Geneva got 17 points from Beth DeLuca on 6-10 shooting from the field. Alyse Scarsella scored all of her 12 points in the second half to go along with a team best seven rebounds. "We could not find #33 (King) in the first half on the defensive end of the floor," said head coach Renee Drake. "She is a very good shooter and we didn′t do a very good job defensively in the first half. We finally got some solid possessions in the second half but they made some big shots that just didn′t allow us back in the game."
Geneva will travel to Grove City on Saturday and Westminster next Wednesday before closing out the season at home against Waynesburg on February 19th.
